Have you ever put off a project until the last minute even though you knew it would only take a few hours to complete? That’s procrastination at its finest, but it’s also Parkinson’s Law. Parkinson’s Law applies to pretty much everything.
Parkinson’s Law states — that work expands to fill the time allocated to it
If you give yourself a week to complete a three-hour task assignment, then that task will become more complex and daunting as the week fills.
Usually, You either use the time to complete the task more slowly or procrastinate and complete the task right before the due date.
Having too much time is the recipe for Procrastination.
Set Artificial deadlines
One easy way to use Parkinson’s Law is by giving artificial deadlines for things we have longer deadlines for.
As an example, let’s say I set myself a time frame for 2 hours to create this content, Initially, I would dump information about this week’s topic into notion or notepad, After that, I do some grammatical checks before I finalize and complete it within the given time frame.
Set your deadline instead of thinking of “ how much time do I have? ”. Think about how much time you actually need for each task. Think of your task as a Short-time goal to complete the faster you finish them, which will free up your time for other activities.
Try the Pomodoro Technique
To boost your productivity use the Pomodoro technique along with Parkinson’s law.
The Pomodoro technique includes the following steps:
List of tasks ordered by priority
Set timer for 25 min
During the timer, work on a task
Take a 5 min break to do something fun or relax your mind
After 4 Pomodoro’s, take a 15-30 min break
Each time you take on a new task, follow these steps. Alternatively, you can use the Pomodoro web page to complete your task attached here.
Once you understand Parkinson’s law and how it works you can use it to your advantage. And you can accomplish more work in less time.
Have a great week!
